Academic Transcripts
You must provide verified or original documentation for all your educational qualifications, as follows:
Results of your secondary school education
Official academic transcripts for all your previous post secondary study at universities, colleges, and/or other private educational institutions.
These should indicate whether the qualification is complete or incomplete. If the documents are not in English, you must provide an official English translation. Requests for Recognition of Prior Learning must be sent with the application, supported by subject outlines and any other relevant documentation from the institution where the prior learning occurred.
Student Requirements
Students must maintain a full-time workload, except in their final semester. International students can no longer take Leave of Absence except on medical grounds or exceptional compassionate circumstances, such as bereavement.
Students who leave the country on fieldwork must alert their school as they are required to inform DEST.
Students are only permitted to repeat a unit once when they are studying in part-time mode. Students must advise the international office of their address within 7 days of arrival and then within 7 days if they change address.
Students must attend at least 80% of their program. School are not required to keep registers for their programs but they do have to record attendance for students in the ELICOS, Foundation and Diploma courses or Degree.
Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress. The school will report students who are excluded and who are unsuccessful in an appeal against exclusion.
Working While You Study
If you have permission to work on your student visa (condition 8105) you are allowed to work while studying. Many students do a limited amount of paid work.
As an international student, you can work a maximum of 20 hours per week while the course is in session. And during student vacations you can work full time.
If you are planning to work either voluntarily or for money while you are studying, you can arrange this when you are in Australia. You need to apply for a visa with "Permission to work" (condition 8105) after you commence study. This visa currently costs an additional $60 AUD.
Things to Remember
You have so many educational options to choose from in Australia, so take some time to think about your career and life goals. The course you study will shape your career and lifeplans. Also think about whether you want to study in the city or in the country. Do you want to study at a small or large college or university? What level qualification do you want? (eg certificate, diploma, degree etc).
You will probably find that the course you want to study is offered at several places in Australia. Is it important that you live somewhere warm or cold? You will also need to consider the institution’s academic entrance requirements, as each college or university and each course has its own standards. If you don’t have enough English, you will need to think about English Language too.
Health Requirements
It will be compulsory for you to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) while you are in Australia. This rule also applies to any members of your immediate family who are with you in Australia. The health insurance fee must be paid before your visa can be issued, and you will be required to renew the health cover annually.
Other requirements
The Australian Government issues student visas for full-time study on the understanding that you study on-campus and have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your time in Australia.
To apply for a visa, contact the most convenient Australian Diplomatic Mission (i.e. Australian Government office) in your home country. The Australian Government office in your country may be an Embassy, High Commission, Consulate or Consulate-General.
